COURSE OBJECTIVES: (Lay Rescuers) The Heartsaver CPR Course is designed to teach CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO) to all lay rescuers, particularly those who are expected to respond to emergencies in the workplace. Participants include security guards, firefighters, police, childcare professionals, and other lay responders. Although the course may be used to teach CPR to all lay rescuers, it is specifically designed for lay rescuers who are required to obtain a course completion card - a credential - documenting completion of a CPR course. All rescuers are trained in CPR and relief of FBAO. The course includes diverse learning opportunities, including a videotaped presentation of the Chain of Survival and warning signs of cardiovascular emergencies; instructor-led discussion to reinforce the signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking; videotaped skills demonstration and practice; instructor-led practice scenarios; and peer practice sessions. Because the course is designed primarily for laypersons who are expected to provide CPR in the workplace, the course teaches mouth-to-mouth ventilation and rescue breathing using barrier devices that are typically used for CPR in the workplace. The coursed certainly can also be used to train laypersons to serve as rescuers in the community, but is designed for participants who are required to attend a CPR course for the workplace. A course completion card (or credential) is provided to participants at the end of this course if they successfully complete the written examination and the skills demonstration. COURSE OBJECTIVES: (Healthcare Providers) The BLS for Healthcare Providers Course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It is intended for participants who provide health care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. These healthcare providers may include (but are not limited to) physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physician's assistants, residents or fellows or medical or nursing students in training, aides, medical or nursing assistants, and other allied health personnel. The course is designed for anyone who is required to take a healthcare provider course for employment. This program involves multiple learning activities: a videotaped overview of the Chain of Survival and other cognitive information; an instructor-led discussion of the adult signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking; videotaped skills demonstration and practice; instructor-led scenarios; and peer practice sessions. All participants who complete the course should be able to demonstrate the skills of CPR, mouth-to-mouth and bag-mask ventilation, use of AEDs, and relief of FBAO for the responsive and unresponsive victim. All participants who successfully complete the course, including the written examination and skills demonstration, will receive a BLS for Healthcare Providers Course completion card (credential). Our training can be tailored to meet the needs of specific groups and individuals from the young to the young at heart. Whether you're a member of a community who wants to know how to help in an emergency, or have a defined duty to act in emergencies, we are here to offer the class that best fits your schedule. Heartsaver CPR Course Description The Heartsaver CPR Course is a modular course that teaches lay rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for adult, child, and infant victims.
